Don’t let me stop you, okay? Lenovo is mine :p

Amazon’s new Show Mode function is now available on certain Lenovo computers. When you enable this, your home screen will be transformed into the home screen of an Echo Show smart display, similar to the Show Mode function on Amazon’s tablets. That means you’ll be able to manage smart home devices, check the weather and read headlines, and talk with Alexa – all of the things you’ve always wanted you could do on your ThinkPad.

The functionality is now being rolled out to Alexa-enabled Yoga, ThinkPad, and IdeaPad PCs in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, India, Ireland, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. Lenovo said additional Alexa-enabled PCs will be available later this year.

If you want to test it out, launch the Alexa app (it should appear if you enter “Alexa” into the Windows search box) and choose the Show Mode option.

Open Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 3 with a gentle incline to the right. The right side of the screen shows an outdoor nighttime scene with the Lenovo logo.

Lenovo first introduced this function with its Yoga Slim 9i at CES 2021. Chromebooks have had this functionality for a while — they can serve as a Nest Hub Max when they’re not in operation — yet as a casual Chromebook customer, I can’t claim I’ve ever used it.

Show Mode seems to be more effective on a tablet computer, which might not often be near the keyboard and touchpad. It might be interesting on the ThinkPad X12 Detachable, for example, but the X12 unit I tested earlier this year didn’t have Alexa. But, oh, don’t let me discourage you from doing this on your clamshell.

Lenovo originally revealed this function with its Yoga Slim 9i at CES 2021. Chromebooks have had this functionality for a long – they can behave like a Nest Hub Max while not in use — but as a regular Chromebook user, I can’t claim I’ve ever used it.

It might be useful on the ThinkPad X12 Detachable, for example, but the X12 device I tested earlier this year did not have Alexa. But, hey, don’t let me stop you from trying this on your clamshell.
